| Masi, a form of tapa made from the beaten bark of the paper mulberry tree. The traditional patterns done with with natural dyes relate to forms in the physical world. Today, in Fiji as elsewhere, tapa is important for rites of passage (births, weddings, funerals), traditional dances and ceremonial occasions. Masi is worn but also exchanged in ceremonies that help sustain basic Fijian beliefs and values as well as relationships between individuals and social groups. Mrs. Ropate from the Lao island group in Fiji is one of the master masi makers. Others available in various sizes | ||
