Men's Night Fire Dance Mask, this three headed versionis very unique. These masks made of tapa stretched over a bamboo structure are worn by men during night dances around a large bonfire. The original purpose of these night fire dances was to honor the spirits of the bush and the men's world of hunting. Now the masked dancers also appear at ceremonies to celebrate political events such as Papua new Guinea's independence day. In addition night fire dances are held to mark initiations and as memorials for people who have died. These masks always have three colors. Red, once obtained from the blood of a man's tongue, stands for blood and male-related activities. Black is associated with women - soot from cooking fires, and the soil where spirits live. The white of the tapa also represents spirits, especially those connected with wet and cloudy days and misty water holes. The ususal patters represent plants, animal tracks, house posts, human tears and stars. But people are free to add contemporary images and those that occur in dreams. This extrememly unusual three headed mask is not for sale but may be loaned on occassion for exhibit
