Mask, malangan/tapaears CU

Region:
Melanesia
CCountry:
Papua New Guinea
Island Group or Local Origin:
New Ireland, Malangan
Category:
Masks
Size:
l8" x 42" x10

This mask has the classic characteristics of malangan, the three dimensional carved out face with opercala snail eyes, different designs on either side of the face and an extended tongue. The bush material on its head is topped by a crest similar to those in the "tatanua" masks and probably representative of the hair cut of young men. the tapa ears are however unusual although there are examples of old mask with them.
