| Tatanua masks dancing at Kavienge, New Ireland. These masks now primarially made in the village of Bols in central New Ireland are an important part of funerary rituals. It is believed that the top ruff represents the hair cut of young men and so symbolically although someone has died, these dancers represent youth and the continuation of the clan. The bird "whistles" in their mouths and their movements relate also to birds which has the added symbolism of the sky and the power of the upper world. | ||
