Woman's Dance stick have incised wood designs of fish, and frigate birds some with spread wings. The frigate bird is of special importance to the people of the Eastern Solomon Islands because it flies over and thus identifies where the schools of bonito fish are which constitute a vital protein part of the peoples diet.Men's dance sticks often have a frigate bird, fish and man/shark motif. Men's dance sticks are patterned after the roromaraugi a parrying shield used to deflect spear blows during battles. Today these mens (and womens) dance sticks are used in ceremonial dances and rituals. Men's dance sticks are held horizontally while women's are held vertically.
