| These semi-abstracted figures represent the owner's ancestral spirit and grade levels in the men's secret societies that dominate life in Vanuatu. These societies are the center of social, spiritual and political life hence one's standing in them is very important and requires the sacrificing of many pigs.This Fern Tree figure was carved by Master Carver Daniel Pala of Lernam Village, North Ambrym, Vanuatu. The rights to this style are owned by his family and this is one of only 3 extant carvings. | ||
