"Kili" bags represent the modern application of an ancient technique. Plaiting baby coconut leaves for the outside is a long and difficult process. The inside of the bag is made from pandanus leaf. These bags originated with the women of Bikini atoll who were moved to Kili island following the US nuclear tests in l946. In need of cash one woman had the idea of making these bags after seeing a purse in a magazine. They continue to be in great demand by local Marshallese andvisitors. This woman of Arno atoll is a master bag maker
