| This tapa made by the women of Fatu Hiva is beaten from the inner bark of the breadfruit tree. Turtle designs are common in Marquesan tattooing and other art forms. Since a turtle can live on both land and in water, Marquesans think of it as moving from the world of the living to the world of the ancestors and so symbolically from the past to the future. | ||
