On Arno Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Mira weaves a traditional mat while her daughter watches.

The tiny countries of Micronesia have undergone extensive colonial influence. However, on the more remote outer atolls traditional life is less affected. Micronesian art often relates to canoes and “wayfinding” (navigation) aides. Many pieces are utilitarian but with elegant three-dimensional forms and complex geometric patterns.
